People and places in Australia: Northern Territory

You would need months, ... years really ... to see The Top End and Red Centre properly.

Darwin is a town like no other - cosmopolitan, casual and friendly. From the Mindil Beach Markets to the rocky cliffs at Nightcliff (fish and chips on the rocks at sunset is a must!) and of course the wonderful people - little wonder that days turn to weeks as visitors find it difficult to move on.

Towns along the highway (The Track) south to Alice Springs, such as Katherine and Tennant Creek are also well worth several days. Katherine has the added attraction of the Gorge, which you can experience on a scheduled cruise, by canoe, or by one of the many walking trails that follow the gorge.

The national parks in the Top End are spectacular. The well-known Kakadu and Litchfield parks are popular - consider also experiencing some of the small, less frequented parks.

Watch out for saltwater crocodiles, but take time to watch and enjoy the birds, lizards and other fauna.
