Below you will find
a general overview regarding driving in Australia.
DRIVING LICENCES
You are able to drive in Australia on a valid overseas drivers licence
for the same class of vehicle you drove back home.
Make sure when you do drive that you are carring your licence
with you, and if your licence is not in English, you should have a translation
with the permit.
An International Drivers Permit is not sufficient by itself and must be
accompanied by a valid drivers permit.
For further information contact the relevant state Road Transport Authority
on arrival.
Outback Travel
While the Australian outback is certianly an incredible experience, many
parts of it are very remote.
If you decide to drive yourself, make sure you take some basic precautions
when in isolated Outback areas.
- Plan your trip
with the aid of a reputable map
- stay on recognised
routes and check facilities and road conditions before departure.
- Advise someone
of your route, destination and arrival time and ask them to notify the
police if you have not contacted them by an agreed time.
- Make sure you carry
ample supplies of petrol/gasoline, food and water.
- Allow at least
5 litres/a gallon of water per person per day.
- Drink water regularly
and in sufficient quantities to prevent dehydration.
- In the case of
a breakdown, stay with your vehicle where there is shade and protection
from the heat.
While it may seem
like extra effort, these precautions are important. As we all know cars
have a habit of breaking down when we least expect it, so it pays to be
prepared.
